Vitiligo: What Causes it & how to Cure it?
Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition that affects only 2% of the total population around the world. This skin disease can affect both men and women, and all skin types. It usually occurs before the age of 20.
This skin condition is hugely stigmatized, especially in Africa where people with vitiligo are discriminated. Religious beliefs and superstition play an important role in this stigmatization. Indeed, it is believed by many tribes that vitiligo is a fury of the gods upon a person, a curse or a spiritual attack.
What are the symptoms of this skin disease
It comes in white patches of skin which are the only symptom of the disease. It mostly appears on visible areas like the hands, the face, and the arms. People with vitiligo may also become sensitive to the sunlight because their skin is no longer protected by melanocytes.
Vitiligo, which is not a malignant skin disease, is more obvious in people with dark skin because of the significant contrast of colours. This may worsen the patients’ psychological and physical health. The most famous person who had this skin condition was Michael Jackson.
What causes this skin disease?
The main factor that causes this disease is the loss of melanocytes (skin pigmentation cells that produces melanin). Other researches demonstrated that genetics play an important role in the onset of this skin condition.
