Best clinics of Eye Cancer Treatment in Turkey

Eye tumors are a bunch of cancer cells that attack the eye by invading and destroying the tissue around it. It is a disease that rarely occurs, but is serious.

Eye cancer can affect both children and adults. In children, it usually appears as retinoblastoma. The most common cancer in adults is melanoma of the choroid.

In order to optimize the chances of a cure from this cancer, early and multidisciplinary management is necessary. It involves awareness raising to enable people to recognize the symptoms of cancer.

Ocular melanoma: most common eye cancer in adults

Ocular melanoma, also called uveal melanoma, is the most common eye cancer diagnosed in adults. It is a tumor with a low incidence rate of 500 new people diagnosed per year in France.

The people who are most at risk of getting this cancer are the elderly or those with light-colored eyes.

Types of malignant ocular tumors in adults

Malignant eye tumors can affect different parts of the eye. It can affect the eyelids, the eye socket or its rings, the conjunctiva and even the eye as a whole. There are several tumors which can be classified into different types.

Eyelid tumors

They have a local malignancy and do not create metastases. They are easily diagnosed and if the patient has surgery early, they will be able to recover and the effects will be minimal. For more advanced forms, oncologists perform larger surgery or radiotherapy or targeted therapy.

There are other eyelid tumors that are more aggressive and metastasize. In order to be able to treat them, a combination of surgery and radiation therapy is usually used.

Conjunctival tumors

These lesions are less common, but are no less dangerous. If the tumor is diagnosed at the right time and treated well with a combination of radiation therapy and surgery, the results can be excellent with little after-effects. It can also help minimize the chances of lymph node relapse or metastasis.

For more aggressive tumors, they are treated with surgery which is supplemented by radiotherapy. Research is being done to make it possible to treat these melanomas by targeted therapy or by immunotherapy.

Orbit tumors

These tumors are rarer and appear in several forms. Different types of tumors can be found in the orbit. To diagnose them, a biopsy is the technique used most often.

Tumors of the eye

These are primary tumors such as retinoblastoma, choroidal melanoma or primary ocular lymphoma. They also represent choroidal metastases originating from cancer in another part of the body (lung, breast, colon, etc.). An ophthalmologist specializing in ocular oncology makes the diagnosis based on ultrasound and clinical evidence.

Causes of ocular tumors

For children, the cause is usually a genetic problem. The cause can be familial, but most often children affected by this cancer are non-inherited cases called sporadic.

For adults, the causes of conjunctival melanoma are related to ultraviolet rays. As for choroid melanoma, the causes are not known.

What are the symptoms of eye cancer?

Eye cancer shows no signs in the early stages. Symptoms do not appear until the tumor grows in size and the tumor causes tissue changes in the eye and vision impairment.

The most common symptoms:

  • Dark spot on the eye and its iris.
  • Blurred vision (blurred, loss of sight).
  • See shapes that float like dots or wavy lines.
  • See shadows or lightning.
  • Change in pupil size.
  • Displacement of the eyeball from its orbit.
  • Mass on the surface of the eye.
  • Persistent redness of the eye.

For children, the symptoms of retinoblastoma are leukocoria and strabismus. Leukocoria is a reflection that appears in the pupil. This reflection can be white or silver.

Diagnosis of ocular melanoma in Istanbul

The most common diagnosis for eye cancer is a clinical examination in Istanbul by an ophthalmologist, a fundus of the eye with a dilated pupil and an ultrasound.

A biopsy (sample) is never done in children to avoid moving the tumor.

In cases of melanoma in adults, the surgeon performs a biopsy to target the risk of metastases, and thus monitor their progress and adapt the treatment.

Treatment of the cancer in Turkey

Eye cancer and eye tumors require severe and delicate management to prevent metastasis or to resort to mutilating surgeries such as eye removal.

This is why our partner eye clinics in Turkey provide you with treatment performed by eye surgeons specializing in oncology.

The treatment of eye cancer relies on ultra-precise rays. These proton beams propagate very precisely and do not affect other tissues.

For some aggressive malignant tumors, surgery can be combined with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy as well as targeted therapy.

This surgery can be conventional or laser. Laser surgery removes cancer cells using a laser beam. It is generally used for small tumors of the eye.

Life-threatening prognosis: is eye tumors fatal?

In children, eye cancer is now 100% treatable thanks to advances in ophthalmology and oncology.

However, in adults, cancer can be fatal if it is metastasized if it is not treated properly. This represents on average 30% of eye cancer cases.
