What is the meaning of Down syndrome or Mongolism?
The presence of defects in the cellular structures that include the genetic material of the body or what is known as chromosomes is the main cause of the occurrence of Down syndrome. A person is supposed to have two of chromosome 21, but Mongolian children have three. The occurrence of this disorder leads to underdevelopment and perpetuation of mental retardation.
Down syndrome is not considered hereditary, as it can be prevented from transmitting from parents to their children. The lives of adults and children suffering from this disease improve upon early detection of this disease and appropriate intervention, depending on the severity of Down syndrome.
